In March of 2010, a Frenchman whose skills at computer use are way above the norm decided that it would be a good idea to hack into something that would garner a great deal of press for the cause he intended to highlight; how utterly unsafe most people are, when it comes to online security. And the effect, while only somewhat shocking to anyone of importance, still made a few headlines despite being largely ignored by the mainstream press. The people involved were obviously not amused in the least, but the damage done was essentially nil. Still, a certain high profile individual might do well to change his passwords.
Barack Obama is the most powerful man in the world at the moment. As President of the United States, he has the ability to destroy the world, to no longer recognize any nation as a nation, and to have truly evil things done by people who will not live long enough to write about their deeds in their memoirs. However, much like many other Americans, Mr. Obama does not have very good cyber sense. The French hacker (whose name I will not butcher by trying to spell it properly) was able to guess not only President Obama’s passwords, but those of many other people, using only information gathered from completely public news sources.
The hacker then proceeded to hack into President Obama’s Twitter account. While tweeting on someone else’s behalf is not technically illegal, it does ring out as something that is shady to the point of being beyond rude. When the hacker was arrested, he admitted that he only did this bit of hacking to demonstrate how easy it is to get most people’s passwords. If the leader of free world can have his life cracked open, we all need to be more careful.
