Twitter broke down during the soccer mania. A tsunami of tweets overwhelmed the Twitter servers and created a lot of outages. The world cup fever saw people using this popular social media tool to tweet their statuses to the outside world. Almost everyone who was hooked onto football was tweeting. Twitter found it difficult to keep pace with growing demand of more user sessions and tweets.

The major and most written about incident of the year is the WIkiLeaks incident. A distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) crippled the service and made it lifeless for sometime this year. This was after the DDoS had attacked PayPal.

Even your e-mail is undoubtedly “protected” by a password of some variety. For example a user in a particular country might have access to particular content, whereas a user in another country might not have access to the same content. According to net neutrality this is not justified as both user have the right to access the same content.

Net neutrality looks fundamentally right, but in the increasing backdrop of terrorist activities, this neutrality can be reconsidered.
Some Democrats feel that the Obama administration’s attempt to make the Internet a level playing field might be far-fetched. A lot of others felt that the Obama administration had no business in regulating the Internet. They felt that the government should have been concentrating on other things. In other words this was not the Government’s business.

If the leader of free world can have his life cracked open, we all need to be more careful.

Most recently, rumors have surfaced that Google is in talks with Groupon. Reportedly, Google could pay as much as $6 billion for the acquisition. In case you don’t know, Groupon is a popular “coupon” site that offers deals at local businesses.

In 2010, Google acquired more than 20 smaller companies, many of which were involved in social media, networking and gaming. Let us not forget that Google purchased YouTube in 2009 for $1.65 billion. It’s hard to imagine that Groupon would get more cash than YouTube. We’ll just have to see if the recent rumors contain any facts.

In related Google news, the European Union has started investigating the company for breaking anti-trust laws. This specific complaint doesn’t cite Google’s constant presence on the Web. Instead, rivals of the popular search engine have filed complaints that Google does not rank their pages equally. Google has said that it will cooperate with EU authorities to investigate the matter, which probably means that either Google is not guilty or that the company doesn’t think anyone working for the EU courts can figure out their ranking system.

Regardless, Google shares fell shortly after the announcement.

Because searches look for actual words, hackers (or “h4xx0rs,” as they would refer to themselves in 733t) exchange certain letters with numbers, and make use of non alphanumeric characters to make what they are saying harder to figure out. And while there is no “l337 to English” dictionary known to exist anywhere, there are a few rules that most people stick to.

For one thing, any vowel should be replaced in some way. Because vowels are such key components of all words, their replacement makes covering your tracks a great deal easier than leaving them as they are. The look is the most important part. As a 3 somewhat resembles an E, swap out your Es for 3s. And 4 works the exact same way as a replacement for A, by the same token. And plurality does not need to be indicated by just an S. Z works just as well, when you want to imply that there are more than one of something. But of course, your creativity should only be stirred by such basic rules as these.

Have you ever been typing quickly, and accidentally typed in the wrong order of letters for a word? If you put the as “teh” from time to time, you can easily adapt that into the l337 word “t3h.” From there, a few other possibilities might come to mind, as far as intentional misspellings go. The idea is to be difficult for a “straight reading” reader to pick up, in the great jumble of writings.

The first computers relied on the human brain to do some evaluation. That is, if you consider an abacus to be a computer. If you do not, the first computers of the modern age were analytical engines. While they were roughly as fast as today’s cheap pocket calculators, their speed was not the defining factor for being known as a computer. To be a computer, a device must be able to make decisions based on logical inputs – which is, by definition, something that a calculator simply can not do. As time went on, these analytical engines were replaced by things that look more like what we know today as computers.

When IBM came out with mainframes, the whole nature of computing changed dramatically. The computer was seen as having the potential to answer any question humanity could possibly pose. These capabilities made the computer a tool which grew in its utility for business (and starting in the 1920s, counting people for the US Census) to the point where is became a necessity by the late 1970s.

As the 1980s saw the growth of personal computers, and the widespread acceptance of them into general business use, this thing called “the Internet” began to form up. Originally little more than a group of computers that people could dial into and post messages, a more official Internet began to solidify as the 80s drew to a close. Through the 90s, the Internet went from curiosity to necessity – and today, computers have few functions other than connecting to one another.

The nicer way is to say that people tweet so that others who care about them can follow them around, through all of the exploits and trials that a life has to offer a person. When a person tweets out a truism that they just discovered, other people who are of like mind can agree to it. And when someone reads an especially interesting article (like this one???), they have the power to tweet about how great it is. This is essentially sharing a part of your life with someone else, even if they are very far away.

Businesses have a tendency to simply use Tweeting as a means of advertising themselves. When a business tweets, it generally wants to share the fact that it is having a sale, or that it has just released a new product that (management thinks) is really awesome. While the purpose is usually an ad, sometimes there is some value in following a business’s tweets.

Every so often, an individual takes a stand on an important issue. For a person like Susan B. Anthony, it was the rights of women to be the societal equals of men. For other people like Rosa Parks, it was for the right we should all have to be lazy… or to fight against segregation, if you want to be more idealistic about it. But in some people’s cases, the fight is about a far less visible issue than whether women may vote to elect our leaders (or their electors). And it may have absolutely nothing to do with a person’s skin color, or how people treat one another in society.

Sometimes an issue is invisible as you walk around in the world. But just like with a disease, not being able to see something does not mean it has no danger about it. In fact, some of the most dangerous things in this world may be completely invisible to the untrained eye. For instance, how many activities in your daily life somehow involve a computer? If you are paid anything but “under the table” cash, you are connected to a system whether you like it or not. If you pump gas at a modern pump, you interact with a computer. And every record on you (and there are records) is computerized.

This is where the gray hat hackers come in, and where they make the most impact. For those of us who realize the importance of having tight security in our computer systems, gray hat hackers serve as stern reminders that the world is not an iron clad place. For people who are legitimately ignorant of the dangers that a hacker can pose to their information (and who keep really lame passwords), gray hat hackers are a wonderful wake up call.
