Internet incidents in 2010 that deserved attention

Internet outages are common. But in 2010 a lot of incidents took place in the big places on the Internet. We depend on the Internet so much for our communication needs. When an outage happens a lot of things are disrupted.

Recently in the month of March, the global online encyclopedic information provider Wikipedia suffered an outage. Plenty of visitors were staring at blank screens not understanding what had happened. Just like Google, Wikipedia is another resource that people hop onto for any or every information need. Not having Wikipedia was like not having a very important business tool for many people.

Gmail suffered a lot of outages in 2010. Gmail servers are one of the busiest. Gmail has got inbuilt Gtalk that makes people log into Gmail all the time. Even if they are not seeing mails, they would rather log onto Gmail to chat by way of the Gtalk messenger service that is an integral part of the Gmail service. In March almost three-day outage time was noticed in Gmail.

2010 also saw China Telecom re-directed all and created confusion on the Internet highways. So this meant a lot of traffic went through China. The purpose of this move by China Telecom is still not established. But what happened could not have happened if not for this.

Twitter broke down during the soccer mania. A tsunami of tweets overwhelmed the Twitter servers and created a lot of outages. The world cup fever saw people using this popular social media tool to tweet their statuses to the outside world. Almost everyone who was hooked onto football was tweeting. Twitter found it difficult to keep pace with growing demand of more user sessions and tweets.

The major and most written about incident of the year is the WIkiLeaks incident. A distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) crippled the service and made it lifeless for sometime this year. This was after the DDoS had attacked PayPal.

Ordering Lunch On The Internet

Many office workers are often too busy to call a restaurant, ask them what is on their menu, and then order lunch. This is especially true when the person does not have a menu and they have to wait for the restaurant to go through the specials of the day. When computers with Internet access are available, ordering food is a breeze. Although many restaurants and fast food places only have their menus posted on their websites, other have interactive websites that allow people to order the food with the click of a mouse. Many even allow the customer to pay for their order via credit card and sometimes even e-checks and Paypal to added convenience.

Other benefits of ordering food on the Internet include not having to order lunch on the telephone, which can be frowned upon at many companies. This is especially important when working in an environment that is typically quiet. Sometimes the food website will allow the ordering customer to add in a tip when proceeding to the check-out page. This allows the delivery person to simply drop off the order at the place of business, avoiding the wait time for the person to come down and retrieve it.

By ordering food on the Internet, mistakes can be avoided many times. When placing an order over the telephone, people can become distracted. Not only can the customer become distracted, the person taking the order can become distracted. Ordering online can cut down on wrong orders and misinformation. The process is fast and easy and it allow for ease when placing multiple orders. Prior to the popularity of computers and the Internet, people had to order either in person or over the telephone, although many still use these methods today. As technology progresses even further, simple daily tasks such as this might become even more simplified.
