These days, it seems that everyone connects to at least one social media forum. Whether you have chosen Facebook or LinkedIn as your medium, social media is a great way to stay connected to those around you. While you are taking advantage of social media to network with your friends and family, not everyone has recognized how powerful a tool social media is for business networking. Taking some time to learn how social media can help you with your business networking can have a big impact on your bottom line.

Of primary importance is how easy social media makes it to build relationships. First, it streamlined the communication process. More importantly, it expands your viability. Joining local associations online or regularly ‘posting’ on associates pages will quickly increase your viability to your community.

Social media also makes it easy to increase your presence. By actively engaging in forums and discussion groups, blogging, and answering questions, you can easily set up yourself as an authority in your particular area of expertise. It is also an effective way to build trust in you or your brand.

Remember, the Internet is literally a sea of people. Finding ways to join social media into your networking plan will quickly change the size of your personal network.

One word of caution: use your professional page as just that. It should not be used to keep your friend and family updated. Instead, have a separate personal page. Failing to do so will make you seem unprofessional and have less of an impact.

The Evolution of the Internet and Socializing

Old-Fashioned Socializing

The old way of meeting and talking to people consisted of letter writing, telephone calls, and setting up a time to meet over coffee or to share a meal. Those were times when the response time was slower between parties and people had to wait for answers to their dates or requests.

Times today have certainly changed. Now, as fast as the click of the mouse, people can send and receive messages, check their emails, use their mobile devices in tracking social media, and find long-lost friends from high school. The social scene has certainly changed significantly, and all for the good, as it certainly does make things move along rather quickly.

The Introduction of the Internet

The Internet is a large part of why the social landscape has changed so much and made things more accessible. Many of the ways to get people socially connected exist online in the form of social networking and information sharing. The Internet has given a way for users to connect on many platforms, including using their desktop computers or their mobile devices like PDAs, cell phones, and laptops.

When Two Worlds Meet

In taking the capabilities of the Internet and the popularity of social networking, the result is a nice mixture of technology and people interacting together. The Internet is incredibly vast and full of a broad range of information. Users can connect on any level of common interests, causes, and likes. The Internet and accessibility for users has been a huge contributing factor in building relationships, building businesses, and creating small networks of people in various social circles.

The marriage of the Internet and social networking has been a great one that is expected to continue to grow at a fast rate. It fully benefits the users and makes the World Wide Web a very exciting place!
